Educating Rita Essay examples -- Education Educating Rita Willy Russel

Educating RitaThe play Educating Rita, only has two characters, Frank and Rita, Rita destinys to learn literacy, and Frank is her tutor. The play is set in the 1970s, when there was not a pass on ofunemployment, and there was plenty of money. Although Rita haseverything she needs, she is dis-satisfied with her life, she wantssomething more. Rita feels that there is no meaning to life, and shewants to find one.The characters Rita and Frank be two totally different people, Ritais uneducated and common, whereas Frank is educated and considerably spoken.I found the play has no specific genre, I found it came under realist, with the issues it covers like divorce, I found it came under comedy, because it made you laugh in places, and I thought it also came underdrama.Frank has a serious drinking habit we argon first introduced to this atthe beginning of the play, when Frank, pulls out a pile of books toreveal a bottle of whisky. This shows the listening that he his tryingto hide his habit because perhaps he feels it is wrong, or perhaps hedoesnt want to get caught drinking at work.Ritas first reaction to this habit was y wanna be careful with thatstuff, it kills y brain cells. This shows the audience that shemight be a person who jokes a lot, but if she says it in a seriousway, then it shows that she doesnt really like drinking, or that sheis concerned for Frank, in case he throws his life away.In the slumber of the play Frank is nearly always drunk, he is alwayspouring himself a drink. In act 2 scene 5 Rita has read Franks poems, are you sober? Are you? This question suggests that Frank was drunka lot and Rita wanted to speak to him when he wasnt. We discover the type of relat... ...Ritas. So there may be a lotof confusion between them in the future. When Rita and Frank have finished confusing each other over Ritasname, Rita notices an erotic movie on the wall, its very eroticisnt it? This shows Rita sees it in a different view than Frankbecause he doesnt/didnt se e it as erotic. This might symbolise thefact that they are from different lifestyles, or that they may notalways see things in the same perspective.Overall I think the first three pages introduce the audience quitewell to the main themes, it introduces Frank as an obvious alcoholicand Rita as an uneducated woman. It shows they both have differentviews and may find it elusive to see each others at times. After reading the play, I found it was a good laugh, it made meunderstand a bit more almost the two different cultures and inspired meto learn.
